First Week of School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the new school year! I know you have a lot to go through in this folder so I will keep this letter brief. I will send updates from the classroom home every week with important information about what we are learning, projects, trips, and ways that you can participate in your student’s learning. I will also get a website soon that will have newsletters and other information on our Pepin third grade class.

Supplies

Students do not need to have any special school supplies for this year. Our classroom was pretty well stocked and we will share what we have. However, if you would like to contribute pencils, wipes, tissues, and clean plastic grocery bags to the class, it would be greatly appreciated.

Homework

Research shows that the best way for students to improve their test scores, expand their vocabulary, and become better readers is...to read! They should be reading a variety of books, including some easy and some “just right books.” Harder books we will tackle together in school. It is one of my goals to help students find books that they truly enjoy and create a class of readers.

• Students should read at least 20 minutes per night during the week and one hour over the weekend. They will have “book bags” that go back and forth from school to home.

• We will start a reading log tomorrow to record how long they are reading and how many pages. This helps me to monitor how things are going with each book.

• For next Tuesday, could you and your child choose a favorite personal photograph to send in or email to me? They will be sharing it with the class.

• Homework assignments will be recorded on a piece of paper in their yellow folders.
