Friday, December 9

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We were busy this week in third grade!

Math

We are continuing our study of multiplication and division, but it is getting more complicated! As you may have seen from the homework. We are learning our 6, 7, 8, and 9s facts, as well as learning strategies for figuring out the harder facts from facts that we know. For example, students can take their 5s facts and then figure out how many more groups they need to add on. That is, 6 x 7 is 5 x 7 plus one more group of 7. We are also learning about simple algebra: substituting what you do not know with a letter (called a variable). Any extra practice with multiplication facts, from using extra math to brainstorming in the car, can be really helpful!

You will find the math test from last week in the folder today. You can choose if you want to sign it and return it for your child’s portfolio or if you want to keep it. Let me know if you have questions.

Reading

Our new reading unit on Wondering and Questioning started this week with brainstorming questions that we have as we are reading a book. Before even starting the book, we listed wonderings from the title and cover. Then, we stopped periodically to wonder about the story. Some of the questions were questions that were answered in the book and some were not. We practiced finding answers in the text or coming up with ideas that made sense based on the story. You can support this at home by asking your child what they are wondering about the book that they are reading each night.

Writing

Students are still working on publishing their personal narratives. For those students that finished, they have been free writing and making text features for the final book which will be a collection of each student’s personal narrative. The collection will be available for you to look at at the next conferences.

Social Studies

This week we created a display of pictures of Pilgrim homes and ways of life. Now we are learning about the next wave of immigrants, the Puritans. We will continue to learn about colonial life (food, pastimes, government, etc) next week.

Easthampton Community Center

We have almost collected our donation goal for the community center: $24! Our snowman is gradually filling in! Today and next week we will also be making holiday cards for the people who go there for their holiday meal so that everyone can participate in contributing.

Yours truly,

Jessica Harwood
